A real Black Friday discount is a price below what the game sold for in October, and the only way to know that number is to check before the sale starts. The strikethrough “list price” on a deal page is whatever the seller typed in, and on board games it’s often a number the box has never sold at. Our one-minute routine is the three-price check.
The three-price check
- The everyday Amazon price. Write it down in early November for every game on your list. If the Black Friday price isn’t below it, that’s a sticker, not a sale.
- The price history. Paste the Amazon link into a price-history tool like Keepa or Keepa and look at the last twelve months. A real deal sits at or near the bottom of that line; a fake one is a price the game already hit three times over the summer.
- The MSRP on the publisher’s page. Most publishers sell direct at full retail on their own site — Catan’s is the easy example — and if Amazon’s strikethrough is higher than that, the discount is measured against a number that doesn’t exist.
One more tell: anything from a third-party seller instead of the retailer itself deserves a second look, because that’s where the inflated strikethroughs live.
