1. CATAN (The Classic) — Buy This One
The original is still the answer. Three to four players, about an hour, and the trading-and-building loop that made modern board gaming happen. It’s the version your friends mean when they say “Catan,” the version every expansion attaches to, and the version whose strategy and robber arguments the whole internet is built around.

2. CATAN: New Energies — The One for Players Who’ve Worn Out the Original
New Energies (2024) is classic Catan wearing a modern-day energy crisis, and it’s the best new idea the line has had in years. You still settle, trade, and build — but now you’re also choosing between cheap fossil-fuel power plants that pollute and pricier renewables that don’t, and the pollution mechanically comes back to bite the whole table. Same 3–4 players, roughly 90 minutes, ages 12 and up.
The reason it’s ranked second and not first: it assumes Catan literacy. The energy layer is what makes it sing, and it sings loudest for people who already know the base game’s rhythms cold. A standalone game per Catan’s official lineup — nothing from your original box carries over, including expansions.
3. Rivals for CATAN — The Couples Version
Can you play Catan with 2 players? Not the board game, no — but Rivals is the officially built answer. It’s a card game head-to-head duel: you develop your own principality with hand management and duel-shaped events instead of an open board. Different muscles than big Catan, same resource DNA.
It’s the only entry here we’d hand a couple without hesitation, and it earns a spot on our best 2-player games list thinking. Know going in that it’s a longer teach than the box implies — the intro game is simple, the full Era game is a real card game.
4. CATAN Junior — The Kids Version That Isn’t a Toy
Junior is real Catan compressed for ages 6–9: build pirate hideouts instead of settlements, trade with a simplified market, and dodge the Ghost Captain instead of the robber. The reason it ranks this high is that adults don’t suffer playing it — decisions exist, the game moves, and a 7-year-old can genuinely win without being allowed to.
If your kids are 10 or older, skip Junior and teach them the real thing — it’s rated 10+ and most kids clear it earlier with a patient teach.
5. CATAN: Starfarers — The Big Sci-Fi One
Starfarers moves Catan into space: rocket ships you physically upgrade, encounter cards, alien trade partners, and a two-hour runtime. It’s the most game in any Catan box, and the production is spectacular — the little plastic motherships are half the purchase price in toy value alone.
It ranks fifth because of what it costs in both money and time. At 3–4 players, ages 14+, and a genuine 120 minutes, it’s a bigger commitment than everything above it — a version for the Catan lover who wants a destination game night, not the weeknight staple.
6. CATAN 3D Edition — The Shelf Trophy
The 3D Edition is classic Catan with sculpted, hand-painted terrain hexes — mountains that rise off the table, wheat you can almost harvest. Identical rules, triple-digit price. It’s gorgeous, it’s the same game, and that’s precisely the ranking: buy it because you love Catan and want the showpiece, never because you’re choosing your first copy.
What buyers expect: a premium version that plays better.
What it is: the identical game in formal wear. If the budget question is “3D Edition or classic plus two expansions?” — take the expansions every time.
