What Board Game Should We Play? Try Our Free Game Night Picker

Enter your player count, time and youngest player's age. Our free picker ranks 51 games we've scored, plus 25 more that fit your table.

Picking the game takes longer than it should. Someone suggests the long strategy game, someone else wants something they can learn in five minutes, and the youngest player at the table is eight.

So we built a picker. Tell it how many people are playing, how long you have, how old your youngest player is and what kind of night you want. It ranks the games that fit, scored with the Bamboo (how easy it is to learn) and Pandas (how fun it is) ratings from our reviews.

Game Night Picker

Tell us who’s at the table. We’ll rank the games that fit, scored with our Bamboo (easy to learn) and Pandas (fun) ratings.

Our shelf (0 games)

Scores use our published review ratings. Games marked “not yet reviewed” fit your table, but we haven’t scored them.

How the Picker Scores Games

The picker works in two steps: it removes the games that can’t work for your table, then it scores the ones that can.

Step one is the filter. A game is dropped if your player count falls outside its box range, if its shortest game is longer than the time you have, or if its maximum time runs to more than double your slot. Age gets one year of grace. A game boxed for 8 and up still shows for a seven-year-old, with a note that it skews a little old.

Step two is the score, out of 100.

Part of the score Points What it rewards
Our review ratings Up to 60 Bamboo and Pandas, weighted by your vibe
Best player count Up to 20 20 if you hit the count the review calls best, 8 if you’re one away
Time fit Up to 12 12 if even a long game fits, 6 if a typical one does
Rules weight −14 to +8 Light games get a boost on “easy to teach” nights, heavy ones a penalty

The vibe setting changes how the ratings are weighed. “Easy to teach” counts Bamboo at 70% and Pandas at 30%. “Most fun” flips that. “Balanced” splits them evenly.

A game only gets a score if we’ve rated it. The picker also lists a few popular games we haven’t reviewed yet, like Kingdomino, Qwirkle and Spot It!, using the player count, time and age printed on the box. They appear under “Also fits (not yet reviewed)” and never outrank a scored game.

Only Pick From Games You Own

Tick “Only pick from games we own” and open “Our shelf” to check off what’s in your cupboard. From then on the picker only suggests games you can actually play tonight. Your shelf is saved in your browser, so it’s there next time. When you copy a link with the box ticked, your shelf goes with it, so your group sees picks from the same cupboard.

Game Night Ideas by Group

Each pick below is what the tool returns for that table. The quick-start buttons at the top of the picker load the same settings. Around the holidays a gold seasonal button joins them, such as “Thanksgiving with the family” through November, set for six players, 45 minutes and a youngest player of eight.

Game night ideas for adults

For four adults with an hour, Cover Your Assets comes out on top with 95. It’s one of the few games we scored 5/5 on both counts, and our review calls four its best player count. Heat: Pedal to the Metal and 7 Wonders tie for second at 90. Tap “4 adults, 1 hour” above the picker to load this table.

Have the whole evening and a group that plays often? Set the time to 2 hours and the vibe to “most fun”. The top three become The Crew: Mission Deep Sea, Heat and Blood Rage. More ideas are in our best board games for adults list.

Game night ideas for families and kids

Four players, half an hour and a youngest player of 8 puts King of Tokyo and Sequence at the top with 96 each, both rated 5/5 for ease. The “Family with kids” button loads these settings.

Drop the youngest age to 6 and the list shrinks to 12 games. Sequence and Cover Your Assets still lead, with a note that both are boxed for 7 and up. Our family board games guide goes deeper by age.

Game night ideas for teens

Five players aged 14 and up with 45 minutes and the “most fun” vibe gives a tie at 92 between Sushi Go Party! and Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza. Coup is close behind at 88 and is at its best with five. See our best board games for teens for more.

Game night ideas for couples

Two players and 30 minutes puts 7 Wonders Duel first with 86. It only works for two, and that’s why it wins here. Jaipur and Dominion follow. The “Date night for 2” button loads it, or browse our best 2-player games.

Game night ideas for big groups

Eight players and half an hour narrows things fast. Only 18 games fit. Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza scores 95, and Wavelength is second at 83, at its best with six to eight. The “Big group” button loads it. Also see our best games for groups.

When you only have 15 minutes

Four players with 15 minutes leaves nine games. Monopoly Deal leads at 93, then Exploding Kittens and Taco Cat. All three are 5/5 on Bamboo, so nobody spends the 15 minutes reading rules.

Playing alone

Set players to 1 and only seven games fit. With 90 minutes and the “most fun” vibe, Everdell leads, ahead of Heat and Wingspan. For something lighter, we also have a list of solo card games.

Why Player Count Matters More Than the Game

The same game can be great at four and dull at two. That’s why the picker gives up to 20 points for hitting a game’s best player count, the second-biggest part of the score.

Our reviews name a best player count wherever the box range hides a sweet spot, and those calls often differ from the box. Ticket to Ride is boxed for 2–5 but our review puts its sweet spot at three or four. 6 Nimmt! seats up to ten, but we call six its best. If your group size changes week to week, our best board games for 4 players list covers the most common table.

Rules weight works the same way. BoardGameGeek users rate each game’s “weight” from light to heavy, and it’s a useful second opinion. Our Bamboo score asks a narrower question: how fast can a new player get going?

Where the Games Come From

The picker holds 76 games in all. The 51 scored games are the 48 we’ve reviewed in full, plus Pandemic, Clue and Jaipur, which we scored on our family, murder mystery and 2-player card game lists.

The other 25 are unscored and use the publisher’s box information. Where that came from Wikipedia rather than the box, we checked it against the publisher, for example Gamewright’s Forbidden Island listing and the box details on Kingdomino’s Wikipedia entry. When we review one of them, it gets a score and moves up the list.

Some of the picks are award winners. Kingdomino won the 2017 Spiel des Jahres, Germany’s game of the year award, and Ticket to Ride won it in 2004, as the full list of Spiel des Jahres winners shows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What board game should we play tonight?

Start with how many people are playing and how long you have, because those two rule out most games. Then pick for the youngest player, not the average one. A game that’s slightly too easy goes better than one that’s too hard.

Can I send my picks to the rest of the group?

Yes. Press “Copy link to these picks” and the link reopens the picker with the same players, time, age and vibe, so everyone sees the same list.

Why isn’t my favorite game in the picker?

The picker only scores games we’ve reviewed or rated on another list, plus a small set of popular games shown unscored. New reviews are added to it as they’re published.

What do Bamboo and Pandas mean?

They’re the two scores in every King Panda Games review. Bamboo, out of 5, rates how easy a game is to learn. Pandas, out of 5, rates how much fun it is once you know it.

Can the picker only suggest games we own?

Yes. Tick “Only pick from games we own” and check your games off in the shelf list. The picker remembers your shelf in your browser, and a copied link carries it to your group.

Is the game night picker free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no sign-up and no app to install.
