Bohnanza Versions Compared (Rio Grande, Amigo, 25th Anniversary and the New Pandasaurus Edition)

· 7 min read

Buy the current Amigo US box while you can still find it. It’s the one we own, it plays 2 to 7, and it’s sold at Walmart for about $14. Amigo’s US company has closed, so it’s a while-supplies-last product. The new Pandasaurus edition, due in November 2026, has fresh chili-pepper art but plays only 3 to 5.

Bohnanza was first published in 1997, and the English boxes have changed publishers several times. Edition details below come from BoardGameGeek’s version listings and each publisher’s rules.

The Amigo US Box (What’s at Walmart)

This is the box to buy right now, and it’s the edition we play. It has the full base deck of 104 bean cards, plus 50 extra cards (Cocoa, Wax and Coffee beans) used for the 2-player duel and 6–7 player games. Seven bean field mats handle the two- and three-field setups.

Amigo Spiele, Bohnanza’s German publisher, took over the US edition from Rio Grande Games around 2021. In October 2025, Amigo’s US company announced it would close at the end of 2025, with existing stock sold while supplies last. That means this box may not be restocked once current stock sells out.

The New Pandasaurus Chili Edition

“Is there a new Bohnanza?” Yes. Pandasaurus Games lists a new English edition on its site, releasing in November 2026 at $17.95. It replaces the beans with chili peppers and has new art by Stephanie Böhm.

The catch is player count. Pandasaurus lists it for 3 to 5 players, while the current Amigo box plays 2 to 7. If you want the duel or 6–7 player games, buy the Amigo box. We haven’t played the Pandasaurus edition, so this section is based on the publisher’s listing.

Older Rio Grande Boxes

Rio Grande Games published Bohnanza in English starting in 2000. That edition already played 2 to 7 and included the extra beans. It also had a rule that’s gone from current boxes: you could buy a third bean field for three gold coins, or two coins in 6–7 player games, according to a transcript of the classic rules.

Rio Grande’s 2016 relaunch replaced that rule with double-sided field mats. Three-player games use the three-field side, and bigger games use two fields. If your secondhand box has separate “3rd bean field” cards, you have the older rules.

What most buyers assume: any Bohnanza box plays the same game.

What’s actually true: the core game is the same, but player counts and the third-field rule differ by edition. The Pandasaurus edition is 3–5 players, and older Rio Grande boxes let you buy a third field.

The 25th Anniversary Edition

Amigo released a 25th Anniversary Edition in 2022. According to its English rulebook, it adds Brandy beans instead of Wax, plus Field beans, a special AMIGO Bean Coin and Magpie beans that let you steal from other players’ fields. It’s a fun collector’s box, but most stores list it as sold out, so it isn’t the practical buy.

Which Bohnanza Should You Buy?

  1. Buying now: the Amigo US box, while it’s in stock. It plays 2 to 7.
  2. You prefer new art and only play with 3–5: wait for the Pandasaurus edition in November 2026.
  3. You want a two-player game: the Amigo box includes the duel, or look for the separate Bohnanza: The Duel.
  4. Kids under 10: look for My First Bohnanza, a simplified version for younger players.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Bohnanza editions?

The core game is the same in every edition. The differences are the player count (2–7 in the Amigo US box, 3–5 in the new Pandasaurus edition), the extra bean types included, and whether you can buy a third bean field.

Which Bohnanza edition is best?

The Amigo US edition, sold at Walmart, is the best buy right now. It plays 2 to 7, includes the Cocoa, Wax and Coffee beans, and costs about $14. Amigo’s US company has closed, so buy it while it’s in stock.

Is there a new Bohnanza edition in 2026?

Yes. Pandasaurus Games lists a new English edition releasing in November 2026, re-themed with chili peppers and new art. It’s listed for 3 to 5 players.

What is the Bohnanza 25th Anniversary Edition?

A 2022 Amigo edition that adds Brandy, Field and Magpie beans and an AMIGO Bean Coin to the base game. Most stores list it as sold out.

Does Rio Grande still publish Bohnanza?

Rio Grande published the English edition from 2000 through its 2016 relaunch. Amigo took over the US edition around 2021, and Pandasaurus Games has the new English edition coming in November 2026.

Why does my Bohnanza box have third bean field cards?

You have an older edition. Early Rio Grande boxes let you buy a third field for three gold coins. Newer editions use double-sided field mats instead.
