Splendor vs Catan (Which Strategy Game Should You Buy)

· 5 min read

Buy Catan if your group likes trading, negotiating and a game that fills an evening. Buy Splendor if you want a 30-minute strategy game that works well with two players. We’ve played Catan about 100 times and Splendor 7 or 8, and we rate both 4/5 Bamboo and 4/5 Pandas. They’re good at very different things.

The Biggest Difference Is Talking

Catan is a social game. You trade with other players on most turns, argue over prices and gang up on whoever’s winning with the robber. The trading table is where Catan’s most memorable moments come from.

Splendor is a quiet game. Nobody trades. You affect other players only by taking the tokens or cards they need. It’s a good fit for people who enjoy thinking more than bargaining.

What people often assume: both are “gateway games,” so either one works for the same group.

What actually happens: a group that loves Catan’s trading may find Splendor too quiet, and a group that dislikes haggling will usually enjoy Splendor more.

Which Is Faster?

Splendor, by a lot. A game takes about 30 minutes, so you can play two or three in the time of one Catan game. Catan usually takes 60 to 120 minutes, and it can run long when players negotiate every trade.

Which Is Better for Two Players?

“Can you play Catan with two players?” Not with the base game, which is for 3 or 4. Splendor plays from 2 to 4, and the two-player game uses only 4 tokens per gem color, which makes it tight and tactical.

If you mostly play as a couple, Splendor is the clear pick. Our best 2-player games list has more options.

Which Is Easier to Learn?

Both teach quickly, and we gave both 4/5 Bamboo. Splendor has four actions and no board, so it’s simpler to explain. Catan adds building costs, the robber and development cards, but most groups have it down after one game, and our Catan review estimates a teach under 20 minutes.

Which Should You Buy?

  1. You play mostly as a couple: Splendor.
  2. Your group loves talking, trading and table politics: Catan.
  3. You want something quick for weeknights: Splendor.
  4. You already own Catan: add Splendor. It’s different enough that both will get played.

Worth knowing: if you already own Catan and want more of its trading feel in a shorter game, try [Bohnanza](https://www.kingpandagames.com/bohnanza-review/). Splendor is the better pick if you want a game with no trading at all.
