The best class in Munchkin is the Warrior, and the best race is the Elf. Warriors win ties in combat, which matters because you have to kill monsters to win. Elves gain a level every time they help someone else kill a monster. Put them together and you get the strongest build in the base game.

The base game, including Munchkin Deluxe, has four Classes (Warrior, Wizard, Thief, Cleric) and three Races (Elf, Dwarf, Halfling). Without a Race card, you’re a human with no special abilities. Abilities below come from the rulebook, the cards in our copy, and the official Munchkin FAQ and 2010 rules change log. Some abilities changed in the 2010 printing, so older cards may read differently.
| Rank | Card | Type | Key ability | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Warrior | Class | Wins ties; Berserking (discard up to 3 cards in combat, +1 each) | Winning fights |
| 2 | Elf | Race | +1 to Run Away; gains a level for each monster it helps kill | Leveling by helping |
| 3 | Wizard | Class | Flight Spell (escape help); Charm Spell (skip a fight) | Avoiding bad fights |
| 4 | Dwarf | Race | Can carry any number of Big items | Stacking big bonuses |
| 5 | Cleric | Class | Turning (bonus against Undead); Resurrection (draw from the discards) | Undead-heavy decks |
| 6 | Halfling | Race | Re-roll a failed Run Away by discarding a card | Surviving bad fights |
| 7 | Thief | Class | Backstab (-2 to a player in combat); Theft (steal a Small item) | Messing with others |
The Best Class Is the Warrior
Warriors win ties, and that’s a bigger deal than it sounds. Normally monsters win ties, so a Warrior effectively gets +1 in every fight. Berserking adds more: in combat, you can discard up to three cards for +1 each.
The rulebook’s own example shows why. Aric, a Level 4 Warrior, is losing to an Enraged Net Troll, 15 to 12. He discards three cards for +3, tying at 15, and wins because Warriors win ties. Any other class loses that fight and has to roll for a 5 or 6 to escape.
Since you can only reach Level 10 by killing a monster, the class that wins the most fights is the class that wins the most games.
The Best Race Is the Elf
The Elf card in our box reads: “+1 to Run Away. You go up a level for every monster you help someone else kill.”

The second ability is the strong one. Normally helpers don’t gain levels, so they have to be bribed with treasure. An Elf gets paid in levels just for helping, and the official FAQ confirms that level can even be the winning one. The +1 to Run Away also raises your escape chance from one in three to one in two.
The Helper Build (Elf Warrior)
“What’s the best race and class combo in Munchkin?” Elf Warrior. It’s what we call the helper build.
- Your Warrior tie-win applies when you help someone else, so other players want you in their fights. The rulebook says that if a Warrior helps you, “you will win if your combined total ties that of the monster.”
- Every fight you help win gives you a level, thanks to the Elf.
- When nobody needs help, you’re still the best fighter at the table on your own turn.
The catch is that everyone else knows it too. An Elf Warrior near Level 9 should expect every Curse at the table.
Worth knowing: you can only have one Class and one Race, unless you play Super Munchkin (two Classes) or Half-Breed (two Races). Half-Breed is the way to stack Elf and Dwarf.
The Middle Picks (Wizard, Dwarf and Cleric)
Wizard is about avoiding fights you can’t win. The Charm Spell lets you discard your whole hand, at least three cards since the 2010 rules, to charm one monster. You take its treasure but don’t gain a level. The Flight Spell lets you discard cards after rolling to Run Away, each adding +1.
Dwarf lets you carry any number of Big items, according to the rulebook. Everyone else is limited to one. Big items tend to carry the biggest bonuses, so a Dwarf with two or three of them can fight well above their level.
Cleric is the most situational class. Turning gives a big bonus against Undead monsters, but the FAQ caps it at three discards per combat, and it does nothing against anything else. Resurrection lets you draw useful cards from the discard piles instead of blind draws.
The Bottom Picks (Halfling and Thief)
Halfling is a survival race. Since the 2010 change log, a Halfling who fails the first Run Away roll can discard a card and roll again. That raises your escape chance from 33% to about 56%. It’s useful, but it doesn’t help you win fights.
Thief is the most fun and the weakest. Backstab lets you discard a card to give a player -2 in combat, once per player per fight, according to Steve Jackson Games’ Thief spotlight. Theft lets you discard a card and roll to steal a Small item. On a 4 or higher you take it, but on a 3 or lower you lose a level. That’s a coin flip, 50/50, with a level on the line.
What most new players do: grab the Thief because stealing sounds like the most munchkin thing to do.
What actually works: take the Warrior or the Elf and let the Thief be someone else’s problem. Half of all Theft attempts cost the Thief a level.
Want More Races and Classes?
The base game only has seven. Expansions add more: Munchkin 2: Unnatural Axe adds the Orc, Munchkin 3: Clerical Errors adds the Gnome and the Bard, and Munchkin 5: De-Ranged adds the Ranger. Our Munchkin expansions guide lists everything each set adds.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best class in Munchkin?
The Warrior. Warriors win ties in combat, where every other class loses, and Berserking adds up to +3 by discarding cards. Since you can only reach Level 10 by killing a monster, winning fights wins games.
What is the best race in Munchkin?
The Elf. It gains a level for every monster it helps someone else kill, and that level can even be the winning one. It also gets +1 to Run Away, so it escapes on a 4 or higher.
What is the best race and class combination in Munchkin?
Elf Warrior. The Warrior’s tie-win applies when helping, so other players want your help, and the Elf gains a level every time that help kills a monster.
Can you have two classes in Munchkin?
Only with the Super Munchkin card, which lets you have two Classes. Half-Breed does the same for Races. Otherwise you can have one of each.
Is the Thief good in Munchkin?
It’s fun but weak. Backstab gives a player -2 in combat, but Theft only succeeds on a 4 or higher, and a failed attempt costs you a level. That’s a 50% chance of losing a level every time you try.
Is it better to be human in Munchkin?
Rarely. Humans have no special abilities, so any Race card is an upgrade. Some monsters are tougher against certain Races, so a few players drop their Race to avoid those penalties.
