Flip 7 Versions Compared (Original, With a Vengeance, Deluxe)

Flip 7, Flip 7 With a Vengeance and the Deluxe Edition compared: what each changes, who it suits, and which to buy first.

There are three Flip 7 boxes, and the original is the one to buy first. The Deluxe Edition is the same game with nicer cards and a scorepad. With a Vengeance is a different, meaner game that suits groups who already know Flip 7.

We’ve played the original a handful of times (our full Flip 7 review scores it 4/5 Bamboo, 3/5 Pandas). We haven’t played With a Vengeance or the Deluxe Edition, so those sections are based on the published contents and rules, and we say where.

1. Flip 7 (Original) — Buy This First

The original is the one we’ve played and the easiest to teach. Number cards come in as many copies as their value, so high cards score more but bust you more often. Three action cards add the swings: Freeze, Flip Three and Second Chance. Our How to Play Flip 7 guide covers the rules.

It’s the right buy for families with kids eight and up and for casual groups. It plays any number from three up.

2. Flip 7 Deluxe Edition — Same Game, Nicer Box

The Deluxe Edition is the original game with upgrades. Retailer listings, including Miniature Market’s, describe it as 94 foil cards, a scorepad and a pencil in a bigger box. The rules don’t change.

Buy it as a gift, or if your group plays often enough that a scorepad saves you hunting for paper. If you already own the original, there’s no new gameplay here.

3. Flip 7 With a Vengeance — The Meaner Sequel

With a Vengeance changes the feel of the game. According to Zatu’s review, it adds thirteen 13s, swaps the bonus cards for negative ones (−2 to −10 and a ÷2) and replaces the action cards with five new ones:

  • Just One More forces a player to flip one more card, then stay.
  • Flip Four is a harsher Flip Three.
  • Steal takes a card from another player.
  • Swap trades one of your cards for someone else’s.
  • Discard makes a player throw away a card of their choice.

It also adds a Zero card that sets your score to zero unless you Flip 7, an Unlucky Seven that discards your other cards, and a Lucky 13 that lets you hold two 13s.

Our main complaint about the original is that every turn is the same flip-or-stay choice. Steal, Swap and Discard look like a direct answer to that, so this is the version we’d try next. It’s a poor first buy, though, because the negative cards make more sense once you know the base game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Flip 7 With a Vengeance an expansion?

It’s sold as its own box with its own deck, built around negative modifiers and new action cards. It plays as a meaner version of Flip 7 rather than an add-on to the original deck.

What’s the difference between Flip 7 and Flip 7 Deluxe?

Only the components. The Deluxe Edition has foil-treated cards, a scorepad and a pencil in a bigger box. The rules and the 94-card deck are the same.

Which Flip 7 is best for kids?

The original. It has the fewest rules, and its bonus cards only add points, while With a Vengeance adds negative cards and card stealing that younger players may find harsh.

Is there a Flip 8?

Not as far as we can find. Most “Flip 8” searches are about Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip phones, not the card game.
