Every year has its noise. New releases flood the market, everyone’s recommending everything, and it’s hard to know what’s actually worth your money. This is our cut: the games from 2025 (and recent standouts that deserve more attention) that we think are worth buying.

We don’t cover every new release. We cover the ones we’d actually tell a friend about.
New Releases Worth Your Money
1. Harmonies

A tile-placement game about building natural landscapes — forests, mountains, rivers — for the animals on your board. Harmonies hits the sweet spot that families and serious gamers both want: clean enough to teach in 10 minutes, layered enough that you’re still finding new strategies after a dozen plays.
What sets it apart is the spatial puzzle. You’re not just placing tiles, you’re managing what each animal needs (bears want mountain tiles at higher elevations, fish need rivers) and working out how to satisfy multiple conditions at once. The art is gorgeous. The gameplay is satisfying in a way that rewards careful planning without punishing mistakes.
Verdict: Buy it. One of our favorite new-to-table games of the year for families and casual strategy fans.
2. Dune Imperium: Uprising

Dune Imperium was already one of the best deck-builders in recent memory. Uprising is the standalone expansion that makes it better — new houses, new mechanics for the smuggler intrigue track, and scenarios that change the win conditions.
The Bamboo score is honest: this game takes real time to learn. There are multiple systems running simultaneously (deck-building, worker placement, combat, intrigue cards) and new players will feel overwhelmed for the first hour. Push through it. By the second game, everything clicks and you’ll realize why Dune Imperium has been sitting at the top of best-of lists for three years running.
Verdict: Buy the base Dune Imperium first if you haven’t played it. Buy Uprising if you have. Not a first-game-night purchase.
3. Sky Team

A two-player cooperative game where you and a partner are landing a plane. One person is the pilot, one is the co-pilot. You each have dice to place on the cockpit board, but here’s the rule: you cannot communicate which dice you’re playing until after you’ve placed them. Silent cooperation.
Sky Team won the Spiel des Jahres in 2024 and for good reason — it creates genuine tension in every round. Placing the wrong die at the wrong moment crashes the plane. Coordinating without talking forces you to read your partner in a way most games never do. It plays in 20 minutes and you’ll want another round immediately.
Verdict: Buy it. The best two-player game to come out in years. Also appears in our Best 2-Player Games list.
4. Nucleum

Set in industrial Bohemia during the nuclear age, Nucleum is a network-building engine game where you’re powering factories and cities using a mix of coal and uranium. It’s a heavier game — expect 30 minutes of teaching the first time — but the engine-building payoff is deeply satisfying once it clicks.
This is the game for your group that’s already graduated from Catan and wants something more. Not a casual pick.
Verdict: Buy it if your group plays heavy euro games. Skip it if you’re still new to strategy games.
Standouts Worth Discovering
These aren’t 2025 releases, but they’ve either grown in popularity this year or are games our readers keep asking about that deserve a proper mention.
5. Wingspan

If you haven’t played Wingspan yet, 2025 is a good year to fix that. Engine-building around bird habitats — you’re collecting birds, laying eggs, gathering food, and building an ecosystem that scores in multiple ways. The art is exceptional and the game is genuinely educational about real bird species without feeling like homework.
It takes a full game to understand the engine. Once you do, it’s one of the most satisfying games we own.
Verdict: Buy it. The Oceania expansion is the best add-on if you want more variety after the base game.
6. Cascadia

Cascadia is the game that people who love Ticket to Ride buy next. Tile drafting and token placement in a Pacific Northwest wilderness theme — you’re building habitats and placing animal tokens to score based on different pattern conditions each game.
It plays fast, the rules fit on a single page, and the variable scoring cards mean every game is a different puzzle. One of the best gateway games of the last few years.
Verdict: Buy it. The Landmarks expansion is also excellent.
